About

The Story of the Seed is a project performed year-round by a group of 3-4 high school biology students. This project was designed to create a connection between all eight units in Justin Bursch's biology course at Willow Glen High School. The project begins with the teacher, Mr.Bursch, assigning groups that will work together all year on the same seeds. After the groups are assigned, they were each given a seed from the brassica oleracea family. (If you are unfamiliar with this term, broccoli, cauliflower and brussel sprouts are all members of the family.) For the first experiment, students were required to germinate the seed, and then transfer their best seedlings into WGHS's main garden. Over the course of the rest of the year, students will closely observe their plants, and hopefully help them grow into healthy vegetables. Throughout the project, students will gain knowledge of the plant life cycle, teamwork, how to write a good experiment and hypothesis, observation, research, and measurement skills, how to record data, how to draw conclusions, and how to maintain a blog.
